Welcome to Episode #29 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and for this episode, the pair celebrate the third full-length album from Whitney Houston, 'I'm Your Baby Tonight'.
Released on 6th November, 1990, on Arista Records, Houston's third album saw her take a decided shift towards more R&B and swing beat stylings following the mammoth pop success of her previous album 'Whitney'. Working alongside Babyface & LA Reid, Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross, the album became a global commercial success reaching number three on the Billboard 200, whilst staying inside the top ten of that chart for 22 weeks. The same album topped the Top R&B Albums chart accumulating eight cumulative weeks atop the chart, outperforming the six-week run from her debut. The album spawned six single releases and would top the year-end 1991 lists of Billboard and Cashbox magazine as the top selling R&B album of the year. Imran & Rhonda delve deep into the album's make-up exploring the singles and collaborations and the shift in Whitney's music from the commercial smash that was her second album. Conversation also veers to Houston's incredible successes of the 90s including movies 'The Bodyguard', 'Waiting to Exhale' and 'The Preacher's Wife'.
