Episode #7 of the CE4K podcast discussed technology that each of the team encountered within our lifetimes that had the biggest impact on our day-to-days. Being the music head, Imran nominated the MP3 as the innovation that had the biggest impact stating "it didn't just revolutionise the music industry, it went as far as reinventing it; it forced the industry to adapt before it was even ready to; it changed the way we as consumers consumed the music we listened to, and the way record labels sold it to us. It ushered in the era of downloading and streaming and set the path to making playback medium obsolete. It's the faceless enemy of the recording industry, it's the victimless crime for listeners."
Taking that idea further though, we could also highlight the subsequent use of digital software as well. In 2002, Cody ChesnuTT famously recorded his debut album, 'The Headphone Masterpiece', in his bedroom. [His song 'The Seed' was later picked up by revered hip-hop band The Roots and repackaged, featuring ChesnuTT, for their album 'Phrenology', proving a hit for both parties.]
Naturally 'The Seed 2.0' had a studio-polished and high-quality sound but the original version housed on 'The Headphone Masterpiece', along with the album's other songs, literally sounded as though they had actually been recorded in his bedroom. With today's technology, however, a "bedroom producer" or "bedroom DJ" is more than capable of creating a project with a level of quality indistinguishable from that of an expensive studio feel created by Platinum-selling artists.
Software like Pro Tools and Ableton, or editing software like Audacity and Goldwave is being embraced by millions as their introduction to making music. Even software like Virtual DJ replaces the need for vinyl and expensive decks. Nowadays, the idea of someone with no experience actually being able to create a piece of music is in no way far-fetched with the technology easily available and with sites like Bandcamp, the ability to profit from those recordings is just as easily established.
